NO THIRD TERM FOR IMO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SEAT IN OWERRI WEST LGA. IT IS THE TURN OF UMUNWOHA CLAN.
COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE UMUNWOHA LEADERS OF THOUGHT MEETING ON SATURDAY, 9TH MAY, 2026 AT IMMACULATE HOTELS, OWERRI.
1) That Owerri west local Government Area is made of three(3) Clans namely;
A. UMUNWOHA CLAN
B. OCHE CLAN
C. ARA CLAN
And these 3 Clans take their turns in the State Assembly Constituency office distribution through zoning arrangements. For example:
2) Hon G.A.S.Amadi of Oche clan represented Owerri-west LGA in the Imo State House of Assembly between 1999-2003.
3)That between 2003-2007, Hon Engr Ikenna Elezieanya from Umunwoha Clan represented Owerri-west LGA in the Imo State Assembly, just for one term.
4) That between 2007-2011, late Hon Ukachi Ekenulo Amaechi(1st Majority leader) from ARA clan represented Owerri-west in the Imo State House of Assembly also for one term.
5) That between 2011-2015, Hon Innocent Ekeh from Oche clan represented Owerri-west in the Imo State House of Assembly again for one term.
6) Between 2015-2019, when it should have been the turn of Umunwoha clan to go again, one Victor Ikonne from Oche clan represented Owerri-west in the Imo State Assembly.
7) Then since 2019- to date ( 8 consecutive years) the incumbent Hon Kanayo Onyemaechi from ARA Clan has been representing Owerri-west in the Imo State House of Assembly. This has never happened in the Local Government since the current political Democratic dispensation.
8)That in January, 2023, all Owerri-west Leaders , Political and secular met in the Avu residence of General Rowland Ogbonna (now late) under the Chairmanship of Hon Sir Levi Oguike and resolved that in obedience to the alleged request by His Excellency , Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, the Governor of Imo State, that Hon Kanayo Onyemaechi be allowed to go back for a second tenure and by 2027 it shall be the turn of Umunwoha clan for their own 8 years.
9) Accordingly, we thank His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma (Onwa), the Governor of Imo State for upholding the charter of equity in Imo State and in Owerri-west LGA and thereby ceding the Owerri west House of Assembly seat to Umunwoha clan.
10) We thank immensely, all men and women of good will from Oche clan and ARA clan for their unflinching support in upholding the charter of equity and ceding the Owerri west House of Assembly seat to Umunwoha.
11)All political parties in Imo State and Owerri-west are here by encouraged and advised to zone and pick their Imo House of Assembly candidates of Owerri-west LGA from Umunwoha clan.
